We are fundraising to continue exemplary performing arts instruction and youth development programming.

WCT has provided an affordable arts space for youth in the historic, working class African American neighborhood of Walltown in Durham. Walltown and Black experience in Durham is central to WCT as an arts institution. This is reflected in the demographics of our student and staff body, in our cultural connections to the area, and our partnerships with organizations such as Families Moving Forward.

We have engaged in the fight for social justice and racial equity by providing extracurricular arts programming to majority Black youth. Studies demonstrate the academic and social value of extracurriculars. WCT’s need-blind admissions have ensured that Black youth in the area have access to programming that allows them to garner these benefits.

WCT also offers youth development programming, including the Walltown Dance Company and the PLAY program. Developed for high school juniors and seniors, PLAY features formal mentorships with groups such as Duke’s Black Law Student Association and college and career preparation.

We have fostered an arts community that allows our students to claim representation and visibility in arts spaces in which they remain underrepresented. Our annual production, The Durham Nutcracker, centers the local concerns of our students in a musical that showcases their talents in hip hop and gospel as much as ballet. We always receive passionate feedback from viewers expressing the importance of seeing Black youth telling their own stories.
